I have a quick question. I have been reading with interest your posts on Dollar Stretcher. I have started (very timidly) toward the idea of a year’s supply of food. We do actually use the food stuffs I buy, so I haven’t gotten so far ahead that I don’t go to the grocery store.
Here’s my question. I use a hand crank can opener. I always have. It’s about 10 or 15 years old and isn’t a very expensive one. Should I buy one of those more expensive versions? If so, what do you recommend?
Thank you,
Cristy

Hi Cristy.
I am not even sure that replying here will get back to you! I hope there is a way we can make sure to connect.
My personal opinion is – if it’s not broke don’t fix it – (grammar correction – ‘Broken’, but the saying goes the other way. If the type you have now is working for you, just get one similar as back up.
On the other hand, thinking long-term, if as you age you think you may have dealings with arthritic conditions, it may be wise to search out a more comfortable hand can opener. The ones with larger twist handles, or a bigger grip for either hand may be of use to you in another 15 years (since you obviously take good care of your utensils it may last that long too!).
I would stay away from anything with too much plastic as plastic tends to ware and break. Also make sure you can get to the blade to both sharpen and clean.
Thank you for following this blog and for allowing us the chance to be of service. Hope this is helpful!
Best Blessings!
