Typically, we share ideas and strategies on storing grains and other food as part of our overall preparedness strategy. Obviously, storage foods have a limit to their effectiveness. We should have other plans in place for a long-term preparedness solution.

Every family that has a preparedness plan, should include planting and growing food as part of their plan. Land space obviously becomes a concern, so some alternative growing methods needs to be considered. That raises the question then - should you consider hydroponics in your preparedness planning?

Let’s look at some thoughts on hydroponics farming and growing:

Traditional farming makes people plant crops over a parcel of land, give the crops water to help them grow, then collect the crops when the harvest comes. This method has been used for many years and has been effective in providing food for families. Until, the need for food has expanded greatly which has pushed scientists to look for various other methods to increase production.

Unfortunately, some of those practices and new growing methods have not been particularly welcome. Many new practices have included using pesticides and herbicides, fertilizers, polluted sewage sludge and irradiation. Considering that these techniques are hazardous to good health and wellness, people have actually returned to organic farming that does not utilize any of these techniques.

Technology has actually discovered an additional means to increase crop production without threatening the wellness of individuals and the environment. This can be done by hydroponics farming. The method can utilize less space than typical farming methods, and actually produce more (and healthier) plants.

Plants require water to grow and produce, however this is only one component of a growing model. The various other components (and most important) are the nutrients that are utilized by the plant to grow. Researchers have discovered that it is just when this is diffused into the water supply that the roots of the crops consume the nutrients – making the plants and food grow.

By doing this in a regulated environment such as a greenhouse, the nutrients can already be mixed into the water supply permitting the crops produce more yields which is what hydroponics gardening is all about.

To prove how efficient it is, scientists made a comparative study on the growth of tomatoes. One batch utilized dirt and had the ability to produce 10 loads. The other batch used hydroponics and was able to produce 60 tons. This study shows that this hydroponics farming approach can produce 6 times more than conventional farming.

Practically any sort of plant that is grown using this way will produce high yields. Though some crops will be able to produce more than others, the length of time to harvest it is still faster than the old technique which gives a quicker turn-around time for farmers. In a preparedness strategy, that’s an important benefit. The faster we can produce a crop (with a higher yield) the better.

The farmer does not have to constantly examine the fields and take out weeds, till the land or look for plant illnesses that generally take place during soil cultivation since there are none. Some people might think that this will consume a lot of water but it doesn’t because it is recycled which also conserves less than traditional farming.

The trouble with a controlled environment is that the plants may not have the ability to get the correct sunshine and carbon dioxide that to help it grow. This trouble can be addressed by installing lights and instilling artificial CO2 into the air.

There are various other ways to grow crops while inside a greenhouse. One approach is called deep water culture. The roots of the plants are raised in the air and a pump releases air out to make it grow. This is optimal for grapes and other crops that grow in this way.

Another technique really like deep water culture is aeroponics. The plants are likewise raised in the air and nutrients below are blended in the form of a fog (or mist) which also reaches the crops to help them get the necessary nutrients to grow.

In flood and drainpipe, a tray is utilized to hold the nutrients. The roots of the plants are held by foam chips or clay pebbles then at particular times of the day, this is swamped so that the plants are able to receive the proper requirements for it to grow. Afterwards, this drains itself out.

Plants can likewise be expanded utilizing films. This method is called nutrient movie technique where light proof plastic is used. This flow along the passage way offering the crops the fundamentals it should grow.

There are lots of techniques to utilize hydroponics in the farm or in the house. The individual just has to inspect exactly what is needed and to think about what plants to grow.

Among the nicest things about hydroponics gardening is that it does not take a great deal of space. This permits the person to establish a greenhouse in the backyard. The only things needed are water in containers, tubes to recycle the water consumed by the plants, sturdy lights to be utilized as fabricated light and some organic nutrients that are readily available at the gardening shop.

Hydroponics has actually been around for virtually 30 years. By getting some details and the appropriate products, the individual can soon plant vegetables and fruits instead of buying it at the neighborhood grocery or supermarket.

There is a new magazine to help you in your preparation strategies. The magazine is called: PREPARE Magazine. In PREPARE, we discuss many alternative growing methods, as well as other helpful storage and self-reliance systems. Get a free one-year subscription to PREPARE by going to: www.preparemag.com/subscribe

And exactly what better method to guarantee your household’s well-being than to have your emergency supplies readily at hand? When people feel adequately prepared, they deal with emergencies much better. It’s gives you a peace of mind that you have done what is necessary to protect the safety of your family. With that, we suggest that you make it a family project to assemble your supplies and exactly what you require to maintain safety.

Take a look here => Always Ready Store for supplies you can stock your supply kit with.

What to do before a disaster strikes
Although there is no way to always know in advance when a certain disaster may strike, seasonal or regional patterns can often help inform you on what to expect. Watch patterns, stay informed, and have good planning in place. Try to make good educated decisions and make certain to have on hand the supplies your family will need.

Water: You must save at least one gallon of water per person per day, for a minimum of three days. A reasonably active person needs at least one-half gallon of water daily just for drinking. Various other needs consist of washing, cooking and sanitation. Kids, nursing moms, and those who are ill demand more water. Obviously, high temperatures and dry weather patterns can increase the amount of water required.

To be prepared with the best emergency supply, it is advised that you have water stored. If you depend on a well, keep in mind that electricity may prohibit you from pulling the water from the well. The bottom-line is to have back-up supplies of water. Keep mineral water in its original container and do not open it till you need it. Store the containers in a cool, dark place, and rotate them every 6 months.

Food: Include a three-day supply of non-perishable food per person, staying clear of items that will make you thirsty. Pick salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals, and canned foods with high fluid content. Stock canned foods, dry blends, and various other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water, or unique preparation.

People with special diets and allergies will need particular attention, as will infants, kids and elderly individuals. Nursing moms could require liquid formula, in case they are not able to nurse. Canned dietetic foods, juices and soups might be valuable for ill or senior people.

Other Emergency Supplies:

Include these products in your emergency kit.

Emergency Radio

Emergency Sanitation Supplies

Kitchen add-ons and cooking utensils, consisting of a can opener

Shovel and various other beneficial devices

Emergency Lighting

Household liquid bleach to deal with drinking water

Money and matches in a water resistant container

Fire extinguisher

Gas and Water Shut off Tools

First aid kit and manual

Photocopies of credit and recognition cards

Special needs items, such as eye glasses, contact lens options, and hearing aid batteries

Items for babies, such as formula, diapers, bottles, and pacifiers

Other products to meet your special household demands

Clothes: If you live in a cold climate, you should consider heat since you could lack heat for a time. Be sure to include one full change of clothing and shoes per person, including:.

Jacket or coat.

Long trousers.

Long sleeve shirt.

Sturdy shoes.

Hat, mittens, and scarf.

Sleeping bag or cozy blanket.

Storage: Just as essential as putting your materials together is preserving them so they are safe to utilize when required. Here are some pointers to keep your materials ready and in good condition:.

Keep canned foods in a cool dry place.

Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers to protect from bugs and to extend shelf life.

Throw out any canned good that becomes swollen, dented, or corroded.

Change saved food and water supplies every 6 months. Be sure to write the storage date on all containers.

Re-think your needs every year and upgrade your kit as your household requires modification.

Keep items in airtight plastic bags and put your whole disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers, such as an unused trashcan, camping backpack, or satchel.

Ensure you are ready for future occasions by restocking your emergency supply kits now. Then, if things fail, you’ll be prepared.

Today, a lot of families are working hard to become more self-sufficient and better prepared for potential difficulties ahead. Many people are learning brand-new skills, growing crops, and storing food, water, and supplies, in case things become significantly more challenging. We have shared quite a bit on the importance of preparedness, and proper whole grains and food storage. Those are still vital elements of proper preparation, but we want to go beyond the topic and discuss existing lifestyle preparedness.

The existing economic environment has helped nurture an increase in the desire for increased self-sufficiency. The high unemployment rate, increased food, energy, and health-care costs, have actually contributed to people working toward much better preparedness.

As part of the general planning effort, people are now becoming more concerned about the efficiency of their home and lifestyle. Many are streamlining their lives and are becoming more frugal with their spending.

Recently, our family chose to make the change into a much more frugal (and simple) way of life. We moved into an old rustic home and got rid of many of our possessions. The move really forced us to become much more efficient in every area of our lifestyle. It’s been difficult, but overall a wonderful transition – and has in fact enhanced the quality of our lives.

One area that we needed to instantly focus on was making our house much more energy efficient. Obviously, it is vital that our homes are safe, warm, and efficient. To many people, a residence is the single-most important possession an individual can own. I don’t always agree with that idea, but I do acknowledge the major value a home is for a family. In fact, because people spend so much time in their house, it is vital that we get it in the best shape we possibly can.

Let’s look at some basic ideas to help make our homes more organized and efficient:.

Keep your place-mats and linen napkins clean by keeping them in proper sized zipper sealed bags. Be sure to label the bag with a sharpie clearly mentioning the number of pieces of each are within the bag. Always remember to force the air out and secure the bags as flat as possible to only utilize minimal space.

Maximize kitchen cabinet storage space. Use a turntable inside a cabinet for smaller items such as spice jars. In larger cabinets, make use of shelf dividers to double the storage space. Stack items on top of each other, such as canned or boxed food products. Install floor to ceiling pantry cabinets. The most vital idea? Eliminate anything you do not require or make use of, such as old home appliances or tableware. Any food that you don’t intend to eat, especially canned items, can be contributed to your regional food bank.

When it pertains to home improvement, think about changing your windows and doors. This not only has a possibility of greatly enhancing the value of the home, it could also significantly reduce the quantity of cash needed to keep your home warm and dry. You can also add additional security with new windows and doors. You might likewise wish to look at efficient means to seal cracks and openings. When we sealed cracks under our home, it made a significant difference in our overall energy costs – and also made our home much less drafty and wet.

There are numerous tutorials that can be found on any type of home-remodeling, probably more than you can possible imagine. Whether you find these tutorials online, in books, or from a friend, it is an excellent aid to evaluate these before and during the home improvement process. If you do not have the expertise you require, you may want to really research your situation before jumping-in to do major repairs.

There are all sorts of things that can be finished in order to improve your home. This consists of lots of jobs which can be done by yourself. While it is not necessarily one of the ideal preparedness projects, one of the most convenient and fulfilling projects that a beginner can try is to build a deck. It’s typically not a massive undertaking, and the deck can provide the family with great enjoyment.

Securely screw your bookcases and various other tall furnishings to your walls! Not just is this step an essential security preventative measure in strengthening your home for a potential earthquake, doing this may in fact prevent a kid or senior from knocking these tall items over on themselves and sustaining serious injuries.

Interior lighting can be utilized to produce the illusion of spaciousness in slim hallways or nooks. Install lights above eye level along the length of the passage in such a way that the light is directed downward. In addition to making the area feel larger, it can also be made use of to illuminate household pictures and ornamental wall elements.

Although it can be alluring to constantly hold off home repairs, or work with an expert to do easy repair work and, in doing this, acquire a pricey bill. Many individuals are astonished to find how easily and financially they are able to do basic home repair and maintenance themselves.

We want to make a recommendation of an important preparedness item that many people may not consider - Flax Seed Oil. Let’s look at some facts about this important seed so you can decide for yourself:

Flax seed oil is pressed from flax seeds. Whether they are pressed into oil, ground or whole, these seeds are an excellent source of minerals, fiber, vitamins, protein and fat. They have a hard outer shell that is shiny and smooth, and are a tiny bit larger than sesame seeds. Depending on the variety, the color of flax seeds range from reddish brown to a deep amber. These organic seeds have been touted as a wonder supplement and are used in the prevention and treatment of many serious illnesses, including diabetes, cancer, heart disease and arthritis.

An important question to ask is how much flax seed should you take? It depends on what benefits you are looking for. If you are using it for bowel regularity, then around one tablespoon of whole or ground flaxseed can be taken once or twice a day, with a full glass of water. If you are using it for the prevention of other health conditions like heart disease, cancer and inflammation, two tablespoons once or twice a day is the typical dose.

Though flaxseed oil is not suitable for cooking, as heating breaks down it healing properties, it can be used in salads. Some doctors recommend taking one tablespoon of flaxseed oil a day as a supplement. It can be used in salads, on vegetables or by simply taking a tablespoon of the oil. Flax oil helps you get a good supply of essential fatty acids.

Flax seed oil contains essential omega-3 fatty acids, which are a powerful antioxidant. They have been shown to lower the risk of death from coronary artery disease, fight cancer, counteract inflammation from lupus and gout and help regulate glucose levels in diabetics. Flax seeds are a great alternative to fish oil, which contains the omega-3′s but, can also leave a fishy aftertaste.

What is it that these organic seeds contain that makes them so effective? The answer is alpha lipoic acid, or ALA, which is an antioxidant that occurs naturally inside every cell of the human body and is found in green vegetables, organ meats, rice bran, brewer’s yeast and of course, flaxseed oil.

It may sound crazy, but many scientists, nutritionists and researchers believe flax seed oil is the next best thing to a multi-vitamin. The natural properties in flax seeds benefit almost every system of the body. From the immune system to the cardiovascular system to the nervous system and the joints of the body, these tiny organic seeds pack a giant health punch.
