Are there any special tips to protect the contents that I need to be aware of? We felt like it was of importance to share on this blog due to the fact that there are often two camps of food storage that people fall into: Regular Use and Emergency Only food storage. Here is a copy of our reply: Basically it only […]

Preparation and Food Storage: Home-canning

Canned goods are not just in the commercially canned containers. Not too far in the distant past, most of the preserved foods had little to do with added preservatives, but with canning. The first canning process was developed as a French military discovery by Nicolas Appert. By now you know me well enough that I am not a big fan of ‘cheap food’. but neither am a I a fan of expensive food! Some people feel as though they have to get shelves and shelves of food that is quick and easy to fix (cheap foods with preservatives and artificial colors and a shelf life of a cock-roach). Other people think they need to get the ready-to-eat meals that are simply the ‘add water’ foods (not many of them are healthy either, but they are often quite pricey as well) and are willing to pay more […]

Water, water everywhere nor any a drop to drink.

This line from the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner rings more true when thinking of surviving difficult times. As we’ve stated before in at least one email that has gone out to everyone who subscribes, water is more VITAL than food when surviving is the issue. A human body can last at least 40 days without food, but begins to shut down all vital organs in less than 3 days of no water. After the 3 day period, with little to no water, the damage is nearly irreversible. The damage begins that early and the body begins dying. […]

Long-Term Workable Pantry TOOLS.

It all sounds nice and good to say ‘Build a Long-Term Workable Pantry” but if you don’t know where to get the tools to do so, it can be a bit frustrating. We’ve touched on how to go about it and some steps to take toward building that pantry, and your new sets of back to basics skills… but now we want to focus on where to GET items you may need. Some people have ample room and can have storage that looks similar to this: But more […]
